JOEY WALLACE – FARMING ADVENTURES
BY JOEY WALLACE
My name is Joey Wallace. I am the biggest cattle farmer in the West of Ireland. My farm is in Newbridge and I have 500 acres. I live with my wife called Lazy Lucy and my two boys called Tim and Tom. Farming is my life.
One day last spring I was feeding my cattle and then I went bailing. After that I went muck spreading. When I was on the last line I fell into the ditch. I had to get the JCB to pull me out but the JCB crashed. So I rang Damien Traynor, Ballygar to pull me out. On the way to the field he got a phone call. He had to go to a car crash. I had to do it myself. I tied a rope around the hitch and pulled it out with my big muscles. After my hard day at work I sat down and watched TV.
One day last summer I was feeding my cattle when I noticed my bull was missing. I was really worried because Roger was a very fierce wild bull. Tim and Tom helped me look in my fields. Lazy Lucy was watching Judge Judy and eating onion rings!
Later I was passing the mart trailer when I heard a funny noise. So I opened the mart trailer and I saw Roger eating the hay. I had forgotten I put him in the trailer earlier that morning. I was so happy that he was not on the road.
One day last winter I was loading the cattle into the mart trailer getting ready to head off to the mart with my sons. Lazy Lucy was asleep in front of the fire. When we arrived at the mart there were hundreds of farmers there.
At the bull ring I sold Roger for €4000 and was happy out. When I looked around to see who bought Roger I was shocked to see Tom smiling up at me holding Roger. It seemed he was coming back home with us. There are no ordinary days on my farm. Every day is special.
